We operate as a para-church organization, not as a church (we choose instead to be the church!) We do, however, meet the IRS requirements for their definition of a church.  It is not required of us therefore to acquire 501(c)(3) status.  We are automatically considered tax exempt. Here is the language direct from the IRS guidelines:

"Churches (including integrated auxiliaries and conventions or associations of churches) that meet the requirements of section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code are automatically considered tax exempt and are not required to apply for and obtain recognition of exempt status from the IRS. Donors are allowed to claim a charitable deduction for donations to a church that meets the section 501(c)(3) requirements even though the church has neither sought nor received IRS recognition that it is tax exempt."

The Center for Discipleship was incorporated in March 2014 as a Michigan not-for-profit entity.  Our ministry and financial activities are governed by a six member board of directors which meets quarterly or more often as necessary.  We utilize standard business accounting practices and reporting requirements.
